Exam Registration and Deadlines
You can register for exams via TUMonline, and it is recommended to do so as early as possible. Simply go to
TUMonline -> Exams -> All Exams, enter the course tag or name (e.g., INHN0004 - “Discrete Structures”),
and click on the exam you want to register for.
Exams are generally offered between the end of the last lecture and the first week of lectures of the following semester.
If an exam does not show up on TUMonline, ask the lecturer or the tutors, or simply wait for a few days.
You have the option to deregister from an exam if you do not plan to attend.
Missing registration means you lose the exam opportunitiy so remember to register for exams you want to take!
Deadlines
- 2 weeks before lectures begin:
- Grade bonus rules (e.g. improving the grade by 0.3) and mid-term details must be announced (§ 6 (5) APSO)
- Use of multiple choice must be announced (§ 12a (1) APSO)

Passing and Failing Exams
Exams are graded on the standard German university scale. A grade of 4.0 or better means you passed. Any grade above 4.0 is considered a fail (§ 23 APSO).
| Grade | German Term | English Translation |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0 – 1.5 | sehr gut | Excellent |
| 1.6 – 2.5 | gut | Good |
| 2.6 – 3.5 | befriedigend | Satisfactory |
| 3.6 – 4.0 | ausreichend | Sufficient (Pass) |
| 4.1 – 5.0 | nicht ausreichend | Insufficient (Fail) |
Passed exams cannot be retaken for the purpose of improving your grade (§ 24 (4) APSO).
If you fail a mandatory or required elective module, you are required to retake it. Retake exams must take place during the retake phase, i.e. up until the end of the first week of lectures of the following semester (§ 44 FPSO).
Examinations failed at the Technical University of Munich can only be retaken at the Technical University of Munich (§ 24 (8) APSO).
Note: You are not automatically registered for retakes; you must actively register for them via TUMonline.
After Exams
You have the right to review your corrected exam within a specified period. During this review, you may raise objections to grading. This could improve or worsen your grade.
Academic Misconduct
If you attempt to influence an exam result through deception or the use of unauthorized aids, the exam is immediately graded as 5.0. Additionally, if an exam is failed specifically due to deception or a disciplinary violation, you are only permitted to retake it once. So please, do not cheat! (§ 22 APSO)
Special Circumstances
If you cannot take an exam or meet a deadline due to valid reasons outside of your control (such as illness), you must:
Immediately report this in writing to the examination board on the day of the exam, and Provide evidence, such as a doctor’s note (§ 10 (6b) APSO).
