IT-Guide

Starting at a new university comes with a lot of accounts, platforms, and tools to juggle. On this page, we guide you through everything you need to get set up at TUM Campus Heilbronn. If you need any further support, check out the IT Support page at TUM.

TUM-ID

Your TUM-ID is the master key to your digital life at TUM. It follows the pattern KVZZKVK (alternating consonants, vowels, and digits — e.g. ga05mat) and is created automatically when you enroll. You’ll use it to log in to virtually every TUM platform mentioned in this guide. You can manage your TUM-ID - including your password and linked email address - via TUMonline. The full address takes the form [TUM ID]@mytum.de, also referred to as your mytum login. A complete list of services accessible with the TUM-ID is available on the LRZ website.

Platforms

TUMonline

TUMonline is your central administrative hub. You’ll use it to register for courses and exams, download enrollment certificates, check grades, and manage your student account. If you’re not sure where to find something administrative, TUMonline is almost always the right starting point. Here are some of the most important applications to get you started:

  • My Studies: overview of all required modules, with course and exam registration. You can also use this list to sign up for lectures and tutorials (red triangle) and exams (green circle)
  • Exams: manage your exam registrations separately
  • My Achievements: view your results once grading is complete
  • Calendar: your confirmed course timetable; can be exported as a calendar subscription
  • Documents: download your enrollment certificate (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung)
  • Semester Fees: track and confirm your semester contribution (due by 15 February and 15 August)
  • Microsoft 365 Account: activate your free MS365 access (see Software section)

TUM also provides official TUMonline tutorials on YouTube if you want a guided walkthrough. E.g. a brief introduction to TUMonline

Moodle

Moodle is where most of your course materials live. Lecture slides, exercise sheets, homework, and announcements. Once you register for a course in TUMonline, you’re automatically enrolled in the corresponding Moodle course. Keep an eye on announcement forums within each course, as lecturers post important updates there. You can configure email notifications per forum based on your preference.

We recommend checking moodle at least twice a week for each course.

Artemis

Artemis is a learning platform developed at TUM, used for programming exercises, homework submissions, and some exams. Its standout feature is built-in version control and automated testing for coding tasks — something you’ll encounter frequently in courses like Fundamentals of Programming. If a course uses Artemis, the setup will be explained in the first session.

TUMExam

TUMExam handles digital exam review (Klausureinsicht). After exams are graded, you’ll receive a personal link (usually via TUMonline’s Meine Leistungen application) to view your corrected exam and submit objections if needed. You have to enter your matriculation number to access your exam.

Bildungscampus

For services and information specifically relating to Campus Heilbronn, you can visit the Bildungscampus Heilbronn portal. The portal offers useful campus-specific resources (e.g. Mensa & Café), event updates, and information provided by the Bildungscampus partners.

New to campus and can’t find your lecture room? NavigaTUM is a student-built room finder with a dedicated view for TUM Campus Heilbronn. Search by room number or building to get location details, maps, and more.

TUM Mobile Apps

TUM provides several official and community-built apps to help manage your daily campus life. The TUM Campus App (available for iOS and Android) is especially useful. It shows your timetable, grades, and canteen menus in one place.

Infrastructure

CampusCard

The CampusCard is your central key to the Bildungscampus. It serves as your ID, room access key, and payment method all in one. You can manage your card, check your balance, and view receipts online at bildungscampus.life.

You can charge up your card at the vending machines located in the libary and the Mensa.

To get started with your CampusCard, you need to:

  1. Register once at bildungscampus.life.
  2. Verify your identity digitally during the registration process using a photo ID (e.g., ID card or passport) and capture a passport photo for the card.
  3. Complete registration to initiate the printing of your CampusCard at the responsible institution.
  4. Pick up your card at the Student Service Point.
  5. You can now use your CampusCard for all services, including parking, printing, library access, and dining.

For more detailed information, check out the CampusCard FAQs.

WLAN

Two networks are relevant on campus:

  • eduroam is the primary network and the one you should use day-to-day. It works across TUM campuses and at other universities.
  • Setup instructions for all operating systems are on the LRZ documentation page.
  • bildungscampus is the network for the Bildungscampus Heilbronn. It works across the Bildungscampus Heilbronn.
  • lrz is an alternative network that requires an active VPN connection to use (see below).

VPN

A VPN connection to the Münchner Wissenschaftsnetz (MWN) is needed for certain services, including accessing the lrz WLAN and some library resources off-campus. The LRZ provides the eduVPN client for this. Setup instructions are available at the LRZ eduVPN page.

Charging

There are chargers everywhere on the campus. You can find them in the library, the lecture halls, and the common areas.

Printing

There are two primary printing spots on the campus. They are in the D Building and the L Building, which requires your campus card to enter. Enter your credentials at the operating computer to access the printer.

Library Access

Your Campus Card doubles as your library card. You can use it to book a room at the Library. For more details, check this link.

Besides the library at the Bildungscampus, you can also use the online catalogue OPAC for TUM members, which offers a variety of books, journals and papers.

Communication

TUM Email

Your official university email address is [TUM ID]@mytum.de. You can also set up a more readable alias in the format firstname. via TUMonline under E-Mail Addresses. Important notifications go to this address, so check it regularly or set up forwarding to an account you actively use. You can access the mailbox via Outlook on the web, or configure it in any standard email client using Exchange. The LRZ documentation covers setup for common clients.

Student Council Channels

The Student Council Campus Heilbronn communicates with students through the following channels:

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tum.fs.hn

These are the best places to get updates on events, deadlines, exam tips, and anything the Student Council is organising.

Software

Via TUMonline

Activate your Microsoft 365 account via the TUMonline application of the same name. This gives you free access to the full Office suite and OneDrive cloud storage.

Via TUM ID

A range of software is available at a discount or free of charge through BayernCollab. Log in with your TUM-ID to see the full list. Additionally, many vendors offer student plans that accept your TUM email for verification such as:

  • JetBrains (IntelliJ, CLion, PyCharm, etc.) Activate your free licence using your TUM email here.
  • GitHub Student Developer Pack — a broad bundle of free tools, activated with your TUM email

Where to Buy IT Equipment

If you forgot your charging block, need a new cable, or want to buy a laptop, here are the best places to look:

  • MediaMarkt: The closest physical stores for immediate needs. You can find MediaMarkt directly in the vicinity of the campus

  • Notebooksbilliger (NBB) & CampusPoint: These online retailers have dedicated student and campus programs offering significant discounts on laptops (especially Lenovo, HP, and Asus). You just need your enrollment certificate or TUM email to verify your student status.

  • Apple Education Store: If you prefer MacBooks or iPads, Apple offers an education discount that often includes seasonal promotions.
